Fearful to fall into the hands of the living God? - 2 Samuel 24:14
Question
The Book of Hebrews says, it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God (Heb. 10:31), but David says it's not. (2 Samuel 24:14)
Answer
2 Samuel 24:14 David said to Gad, "I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the LORD, for his mercy is great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men."Hebrews 10:31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Those living in covenant loyalty and faithfulness need to have no fear of God. David had learned that God gives GREAT grace. Jesus, too, had no fear of God: "Into your hands I commit my spirit" (Luke 23:46). This is far different than the warning to unfaithful and unrepentant sinners in Hebrews 10:31. As Ezra 8:22 states, "The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him." Therefore, we should "humble ourselves, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift us up in due time" (1 Pet. 5:6).
